A quick update on Sudan for English-speaking friends and activists (as of 4/30/2023):
• A huge food crisis (water, medicines) and hospitals
• Power outages and internet services
• Casualties: 512 killed including 13 doctors during work, and over 4193 injured as of today .. most of the hospitals were bombed.
Who are those fighting?
The current clashes are between the regular army (SAF) and a paramilitary force called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This militia was originally the rural armed bands known as Janjaweed created by the former president Bashir’s regime to crush Darfur rebels, and then to protect him.
• It’s not yet a civil war, it’s a war between 2 Generals fighting for full power of the country.
. RSF and SAF leaders are both responsible of the Sit-in mssacre in 2019 against civilian peaceful activists (over 100 were killed).
• Worried of accountability when the civilian government to be formed, the 2 Generals (Burhan/Hemeti) carried out the military coup of Oct 25, 2021. against the transitional civilan government of Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk.
• Why and how this fragile coalition of the 2 Generals broke? The role of Islamists inside the army (SAF)
• The role of Shadow Brigades (armed civilian Islamists)
More things behind the armed conflict:
+ Transitional Justice and Accountability
+ Gold (Russia)
+ Nile Water (Egypt)
+ Natural resources, etc. (UAE, Saudi Arabia)
What we need now:
• A lasting ceasefire to hold
• Serious peace negotiation
• Holding regional power accountable
. To open safe corridors for humanitarian aid of food and medicines "Exercise utmost pressure on both belligerent Generals for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire and truce to be closely monitored by relevant UN entities on the ground."
• Role of neighboring countries: open borders to let people take refuge (Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Central Africa, Chad, and Libya)
• Targeted sanctions against war mongers' assets in the US, Europe, Canada, Egypt, UAE, and Malaysia
